Works
Overview

Nygel Jones is a mixed media artist with a multifaceted practice that spans sculpture, painting and forms of fabrication. Often large scale, his sculptural works combine his artistic style of painting geometric shapes and fictional cityscapes with that of his passion for construction and engineering. After receiving his BFA from Montserrat College of Art (2015), Jones began working for a custom manufacturing service where he became familiar with signage and framing supplies. This past experience is now integrated into the artists practice, along with his most recent fascination, puzzles. Similar to that of a logistical or mathematical puzzle, the artist tries to test one’s ingenuity or knowledge when observing his work – expecting them to piece it together in a certain way.

Biography

With a multifaceted practice that spans sculpture, painting and forms of fabrication, Nygel Jones creates large-scale sculptural works that combine his artistic style of painting geometric shapes and fictional cityscapes with that of his passion for construction and engineering. After receiving his BFA from Montserrat College of Art (2015), Jones began working for a custom manufacturing service where he became familiar with signage and framing supplies. Throughout his employment, the artist sought to seize the opportunity to expand upon his approach of making art, further inspiring him to develop his strategic style of mechanically constructing wooden abstract forms.

As for Nygel’s most recent works, he continuously sources inspiration from his past experience in industrial design, while combining that with his love for both mathematical and logical puzzles. Similar to a puzzle, the artist tries to test one’s ingenuity or knowledge when observing his work – expecting them to piece it together in a certain way. He states that his artistic process can be similar to playing a strategic game with a specific equation in which every piece and move has purpose. Nygel’s mixed media sculptures remain a visual and physical metaphor, either interoperating a musician intuitively playing an instrument or a hobbyist building a Lego set.
