Biography
Raul Marin is one of Nicaragua’s most renowned artists. He was born in Leon, Nicaragua, around 1950. He took up painting from a young age. He traveled to Florence, Italy to study painting when he was 24 years old. He studied there for 14 years of his life, graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence around 1977. In 1992, he returned to Nicaragua, becoming one of the country’s foremost painters. He received the "Leonel Vanegas" National Painting Award convened by Nicaragua’s Institute of Culture for his precise painting style. His utilization of the palette knife in his paintings gives his paintings a very distinct texture. He has been known to paint religious iconography into his art, as well as circuses. The focus he is known for in his art, however, is hyper-realistic settings, from a zoom-in of tall grass to his famous paintings of storms. There is an implied motion to Marin’s paintings, which capture moments caught in action - the breeze running through the blades of grass, the mighty rocking of a boat swept into a tempest. He also draws from the impressionist and expressionist movements.
